If you are a resident of Montreal, Quebec and you owe taxes to Revenue Canada, you have a number of options.
In some circumstances it is possible to work out a deal with Revenue Canada (now known as Canada Revenue Agency).
To do so, contact the Revenue Canada office that is closest to where you live. Explain your circumstances to them, and negotiate a plan of repayment. For example, you could offer to pay a couple hundred dollars per month. It is up to Revenue Canada whether they will decide to accept the deal, or whether they will take further action against you to collect the taxes owing.
Remember, whatever deal Revenue Canada agrees to, you will still be charged penalties and interest until your debt is paid back in full. Also, if you cannot reach an agreement, Revenue Canada has the power to withhold things like GST and child tax credits. They may also garnish your wages and take money from your bank account.
Generally Revenue Canada will not agree to accept less than the full amount owing. After all, if they allow you to pay back less than the full amount, they may be forced to bend the rules for everyone. To make a deal to pay less than the amount owing, you must file a proposal.
If you live in Montreal, Quebec and are having trouble with taxes due to Revenue Canada, please contact us immediately. We can evaluate your situation and establish the best course of action.
